After bringing its diesel engines up to the Tier 4 Final Qualification ICE launched the i-Timer in early 2014 to further reduce fuel consumption NOx emissions and the carbon footprint of the hydraulic power packs. 
 
In a nutshell the i-Timer automatically shuts down the engine when there is no workload to reduce idling time thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions. 

ICE vibro hammers are reliable and powerful driving tools and most piles are driven to depth within no time. ICE research indicates that the average Power Pack runs at a ratio of 4:1 which means that only 1 in every 4 hours of engine running time is required for the operation of the vibratory hammers. The rest of the time is used for positioning and lifting of the next sheet pile or casing repositioning the crane or lost due to distractions of the operator team.  By shutting down the engine during these three hours fuel savings of up to 35% will be achieved!
 
The i-Timer start-stop system is controlled by the power pack’s on-board iQan computer. After a userdefined 1-10 minute interval the engine will shut down automatically when it detects no workload. A number of safeguards have been added to the power pack to ensure vital safety mechanisms are not deactivated. We ensure hydraulic pressure remains throughout the system so that for example the clamps do not suddenly lose pressure and open to drop piles. The engine is restarted manually by wireless remote control.The idle timer is especially beneficial when the power pack sits on the counter weight of a crawler crane where the controls are hard to access by the operator and engines are run without manual switch off.
 
The modest investment in an i-Timer is earned back within 4-6 months with Diesel savings and reduced oil and filter change costs. Benefits to the environment are immediate: reduced carbon and NOx emissions reduced PM10 and PM2.5 particulate emissions and reduced noise pollution from the engine.

What is a Tier 4 engine?
In the Tier 4 Final engines the nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions have been reduced up to 95% and particulate matter (pm) have almost been eliminated altogether. This is achieved by an integrated advanced fuel injection systems optimised motor management and afterburners in the exhaust system. Furthermore ICE applies the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) AdBlue system to reduce the NOx emissions the industry’s major air pollutant to an absolute minimum. AdBlue is especially used to reduce emission of this pollutant. It reduces harmful emissions through a chemical reaction into harmless nitrogen and water.
